South Tyrol: a land of lakes, vineyards and the Dolomites
In the Malibu Van, from Lake Reschen via Bolzano to the Fassa Valley.
Lakes, vineyards and stunning mountain scenery characterise this journey through South Tyrol and the Dolomites. In the Malibu Van, the tour took us from Lake Reschen via Bolzano, the capital of South Tyrol, to the Fassa Valley in the heart of the Dolomites. The trip offered relaxing days by idyllic lakes, delightful evenings enjoying regional specialities, varied cycle rides and unforgettable hikes in one of Europe’s most beautiful mountain landscapes. A travelogue about the diversity of South Tyrol and the freedom to explore this region flexibly and in comfort on four wheels.
A stop-off at Lake Reschen
To make our journey to South Tyrol a relaxing one, we first stopped off at Lake Reschen. The following day, the route wound its way through picturesque vineyards, descending from an altitude of around 1,500 metres to 250 metres, all the way to Bolzano. After two eventful nights in the capital of South Tyrol, we were eventually drawn back to the mountains – to the Fassa Valley, right in the heart of the Dolomites.
After a relaxed arrival at Lake Reschen, there was still plenty of time to enjoy the evening at a leisurely pace. As we were only staying there for one night, we deliberately chose an idyllic pitch rather than a traditional campsite. With a view of the nearby Lake Haidersee, accompanied by glorious weather and a stunning sunset, the setting was perfect for a cosy dinner.
Cycling around Lake Reschen
The next morning, we explored Lake Reschen and the surrounding area by bike. Whilst there, we learnt more about the lake’s eventful history and enjoyed the stunning scenery. Of course, a dip in the water was a must – pleasantly refreshing and much less cold than expected.
In the afternoon, we continued our journey towards Bolzano. On arriving at the modern ‘Montiggl’ campsite, we rounded off the day with a swim in the pond, followed by a hearty barbecue and a glass of local wine.
Moments of pleasure in Bolzano
We spent the following day exploring the historic old town of Bolzano. Afterwards, a dip in Lake Montiggler provided the perfect refreshment, before we rounded off the evening in cosy style by cooking together in the Malibu Van.
The combination of Mediterranean charm, South Tyrolean hospitality and relaxing moments by the water made our stay in Bolzano a truly special experience.
Off to the Fassa Valley
After a leisurely breakfast, it was time to head back into the mountains! We reached the Fassa Valley via a stunning mountain pass, nestled against the impressive backdrop of the Dolomites.
Our destination was the ‘Camping Marmolada’ campsite. As they don’t take bookings here, you’ll need a bit of patience and a bit of luck. We passed the time during the 30-minute wait with a typical South Tyrolean snack before we were finally able to move into our pitch.
Cycling through the Fassa Valley
Well fed, we then set off to explore the valley on our bikes, following the course of the river through the picturesque landscape of the Fassa Valley. Passing green meadows, charming villages and the striking rock formations of the Dolomites, the tour offered a succession of breathtaking views.
Hiking in the heart of the Dolomites
The next day, we laced up our walking boots: we set off on a climb to an altitude of just under 2,950 metres. Thanks to the excellent network of cable cars, everyone can decide for themselves how many metres of elevation gain they wish to cover on foot.
The spectacular mountain scenery of the Dolomites, with its green valleys, rugged rock formations and breathtaking panoramic views of the peaks, was undoubtedly the highlight of the whole trip. Whether on the hiking trails, at the viewpoints or whilst travelling on the mountain railways – the extraordinary landscape was a delight at every turn.
There were still a few treats in store on the way home, too. A visit to a winery and a pop into an Italian supermarket meant we were able to take a little piece of South Tyrol home with us.
Via Brixen, Innsbruck and the Arlberg Tunnel, the route finally took us back to Upper Swabia, where the familiar air of home was already waiting for us.
Conclusion
The Malibu Van with automatic transmission handled the winding roads of the Dolomites with ease and in comfort, proving to be the perfect companion for this trip. South Tyrol and the Dolomites offer everything that makes for a successful active holiday: stunning natural scenery, a wide variety of outdoor activities and culinary delights. A region that makes you want to come back.
